In the past, there was no law requiring manufacturers to identify the fur used in clothing unless it costs more than $150. This would leave consumers in the dark as to whether they had been sold real or faux fur. The sale of clothing made from animal fur or fur-like material ran rampant within the United States. Garments without labels or falsely represented material descriptions were common occurrences with no oversight on the garment manufacturers. In order to protect consumers’ rights to correct information on their purchases, President Obama signed the Truth in Fur Labeling Act on Dec 18, 2010. The law states that all products containing any animal fur (no matter how much) have to identify on the labels which species and which country of origin the fur comes from.
