Snap Fact #204

President Obama Shows Respect and Support For Families of Fallen Soldiers!

Under President Bush’s term, the government would not allow the media to record the return of fallen soldiers as their remains were returned to Dover Air Force Base in Maryland. This policy was meant to insulate the country from the shock and sadness of the consequences of the 2 wars that that had been initiated during their watch.

One of the first things that President Obama attended to early in his presidency was to direct the Defense Department to reverse the bush policy, and more. On March 18, 2009 Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced that the media be welcome to cover this sad process. At the same time it was stated that the Pentagon would pay the expenses for the families of the fallen to travel to Dover to be on hand when their loved one arrived.
