Snap Fact #265

President Obama Made Donations to Haiti Disaster Relief Tax Deductible!

President Obama supported and signed a bill into law in 2009 to give a tax deduction on their 2010 income tax return for anyone making donations to assist in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake disaster.

The government used this tax deduction strategy to encourage donations to the quake victims in Haiti. In addition, President Barack Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama donated $ 5,000 from their own personal bank account to the Haiti relief effort in order to show their support and encourage other Americans to help the victims. "Americans have opened their hearts to help those affected by the Haiti earthquake," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman." This new law provides an immediate tax benefit for the many taxpayers who have made generous donations."
