In his 2011 State of the Union Address, President Obama promised that, for the first time ever, American taxpayers would be able to go online and see an exact breakdown of how our federal tax dollars are being spent. That year a computer site, called Taxpayer Receipt, was launched by the White House to do just that. Because the National Budget changes every year they’ve updated the tool to reflect current spending. You just have to enter three pieces of anonymous information regarding amounts you pay on your taxes, and the updated 2012 Taxpayer Receipt will give you a breakdown of how your individual 2011 tax dollars are spent on priorities like education, veterans benefits, or health care. Upon release of the update, President Obama spoke about the Receipt as a “terrific way for people to be able to get information about where their tax dollars are actually going.”
